Celebrating Bhangra on the Global Stage: Hardeep Singh Sahota in Hong Kong
Royal Academy of Punjab is proud to celebrate another meaningful international chapter for Hardeep Singh Sahota, Founder, Artistic Director and Executive Director of the Royal Academy of Punjab Society, as he returned to Hong Kong to serve as a judge and contribute to the continued growth of Bhangra on the global stage.
For Hardeep, travelling internationally for Bhangra is about much more than attending a competition. It is an opportunity to represent Punjabi culture, connect with the worldwide Bhangra community, support the next generation of performers, and help preserve the traditions that have shaped this art form for generations.
A Global Celebration of Bhangra
The Hong Kong Bhangra competition brought together dancers, organizers, musicians, judges and supporters who share a common passion for Punjabi folk dance and culture.
Hardeep had the privilege of joining the judging panel and witnessing the dedication that teams brought to the stage. Every performance represented countless hours of training, teamwork, sacrifice and commitment.
Judging Bhangra carries an important responsibility. Beyond formations, synchronization and energy, it requires an understanding of the traditional character of Bhangra—its movements, musicality, presentation, expression and connection to Punjabi folk heritage.
One aspect Hardeep particularly appreciated was the opportunity for judges to meet immediately following the competition to discuss scores and provide feedback while each performance was still fresh in their minds. Constructive and timely feedback is an important part of helping dancers and teams continue to develop.
Representing Punjabi Culture Internationally
For Hardeep, moments like these are a reminder of how far Punjabi folk arts have travelled.
From Punjab to Canada, Hong Kong and communities around the world, Bhangra continues to connect people across borders, languages and generations. While its global reach continues to grow, preserving its cultural roots remains essential.
Hardeep has dedicated years to Punjabi folk arts education, mentorship and cultural preservation through the Royal Academy of Punjab. His work has focused not only on developing strong performers, but also on helping young people understand the history, discipline and cultural meaning behind what they perform.
International opportunities such as Hong Kong provide another platform to share that philosophy and build relationships with people who are equally committed to the future of Bhangra.
Gratitude to the Hong Kong Bhangra Community
Hardeep extends his sincere appreciation to the organizers and the entire Hong Kong Bhangra community for the invitation, hospitality and respect shown throughout his visit.
He is especially grateful to the performers who stepped onto the stage and shared their hard work. Whether a team received a placing or participated for the experience, every dancer contributed to the growth of Bhangra.
Competitions are ultimately about more than trophies. They create opportunities for artists to challenge themselves, learn from one another, develop friendships and keep Punjabi folk traditions visible for future generations.
Continuing the Journey
What began as a passion for Bhangra has grown into a lifelong commitment for Hardeep Singh Sahota—one that continues through teaching, judging, mentoring, curriculum development and cultural advocacy.
Every classroom, performance, competition and international journey is another opportunity to pass Punjabi culture forward.
For Hardeep, the greatest achievement is not simply standing on an international stage or receiving recognition. It is seeing Punjabi folk arts continue to grow while maintaining a strong connection to their roots.
“Every opportunity to represent Bhangra internationally reminds me why we started this journey. It is not only about dance—it is about our culture, our history and making sure the next generation has something meaningful to carry forward. I am grateful to Hong Kong for welcoming me once again and for continuing to give Bhangra a platform where our community can come together, learn and celebrate.” — Hardeep Singh Sahota
Royal Academy of Punjab congratulates all participating and placing teams and extends its appreciation to the organizers, volunteers, musicians, judges, families and supporters who continue to strengthen the international Bhangra community.
From Surrey to the world, the journey continues—one beat, one student and one stage at a time.
